FJR EOM Routes (Eastern Owners Meet)

I didn’t produce these routes, the fine folks putting on this shin-dig get all the credit.

The thread with info about these routes is [here]

I’ve posted them here for convenience sake…

I have stuffed all of the .GPX routes into one Mapsource .GDB file here: ALL EOM-07 Routes in one GDB File.
(I have pushed these routes, through this file to my Zumo, then from the menu, chose ‘User Data’, Routes, select them, import, and it works nicely. I cannot comment on how well this will work or not work for any other device.)

For those folks who are GPS impaired, I’ve bundled up the Adobe PDF text directions for all routes and put them here:
All EOM_Text_Directions in one handy .zip file.

This should include all the latest changes that have been blessed by Heidi. If not, then they’ll be updated again.

Another one bites the dust, or will soon…

Shortly after cleaning up this mess.

I turn around to see this:

IMG 0019

This is a rather LARGE Catalpa tree, split down the middle with another 60 feet of it hanging over the driveway…

IMG 0020

I don’t think it will hit the barn when it falls… I don’t have the equipment to get that high and start topping it off, so we’re going to wait. I expect the next storm will bring it down.

These photos certainly don’t do it justice, this is a BIG tree… I’m going to miss the two biggest trees along our driveway.

Time to plant some thing new, something fast growing I suppose, and I’m going to need a bigger chain saw…

Zed is sold again…

Well it’s sold after all. AS-IS. (See previous)

I’m going to trailer it to the guys house tomorrow. He’s taking it as0is, not running the way it *should*, but it’s been appropriately discounted.

I could either spend time and $ fixing it, both of which are in short supply, or let it go and save the guy a few hundred that he can put towards getting it running right. I left it up to him and he decided to go for it.

So along with the bike he gets:

  • Origian screen plus speed screen
  • 6 extra oil filters
  • Extra set of carbs (plus miscelaneous vacuum hoses)
  • Extra Dash that I had picked up on ebay just to get the rubber grommets
  • Shop manual.

It’s all good but I’m going to miss that bike 🙁

Update: It was picked up tonight. Loaded in the back of a pickup truck and strapped down the most ridiculous way. They didn’t want my advice on how to strap it. They guys’s that was transporting it is a ‘stunta’ so obviously he knows what he’s doing. (that was sarcasm in case you didn’t get that).

If he makes it more than 10 miles down the road with out the bike falling in the back of the truck or breaking the side stand I’ll be impressed. Good thing he signed the bill of sale, AS-IS-WHERE-IS.

What ever happens to it now, aint on me. I sincerely hope that the buyer invests in a helmet and some gear. He seemed like a nice guy, and I really don’t want to read about him in the paper.

Web filtering with Ubuntu, and Dans Guardian

OK, I have kiddies at home, kiddies that need not be exposed to some of the stuff on the net. Really it’s just too easy for them to wander off into the bushes and see stuff that a 7, 10 and 13 year old just doesn’t need to see.

Thus after much deliberation and investigation it was decided that Dansguardian was the way to go.

I initially installed the server version of feisty on an old laptop to give this a go.  It worked out OK, but the old laptop just didn’t have enough to keep things running smoothly for more than an hour. The lack of a GUI also made things a little more difficult when looking at the logs and stuff. (I was trapped in a 640×480 console environment and it just sucked).

So today I started over, again using the standard version of Ubuntu ‘Feisty edition’. If you’re using the server edition you can use this tutorial, which given it’s age has some pitfalls. Most notably you need to edit the firehol script to replace all instances of ‘%q’ with ‘%b’.

sudo gedit /lib/firehol/firehol (replace vi with you editor of choice) and replace all %q strings with %b.
This is documented in that thread somewhere toward page 7 I think.

After fumbling through that again, I figured there had to be a better way, and there is.

I opted for the Dansguardian/Web Content Filtering Only installer from the ‘Christian Edition’.

You still need to install ‘squid’ sudo apt-get squid

But after that it’s fairly painless. It also includes a pretty handy gui for tweaking the Dansguardian files.

The base network is set up like so:

Network

Items of note:

  • Not all computers are filtered, but anyone can be by using the proxy manually by configuring the browser to do so.
  • Computers I WANT to be filtered are forced to do so by the following:
    • They have DHCP reservations for both their ethernet address and through the wireless to get an IP that I want them to have.
    • DHCP also give them bad DNS info.
    • They can access printers and what not on the local network.
    • Any traffic that tries to get outside from these addresses is dropped by an Access list in the router.
    • To surf, their browsers must be configured to use the proxy .99 on my network, else they go nowhere.
  • Yes, this isn’t perfect
    • The easy end around on this is to change your IP, and hard-code it to a valid IP.
    • But my kids can’t do that (yet) and they aren’t admins on the machines that are forced to the proxy anyway.
  • I’m sure there may be other ways around it that I haven’t thought of, but for now this is working well.

This angers me…

Toddler found dead in hot car…

I mean come on. It’s only been about as hot as I can remember for a while now. They were talking 103 degrees in places and the humidity is crazy.

We aren’t under a heat alert, we’re under an Extreme Heat Alert. Schools have closed because of the heat.

It truly amazes me that people are simply this dumb. I am saddened by this, and am sorry for her loss, but she needs to be locked up and kept away from people. Union Township is a pretty nice area too for the most part. Can’t wait find out if it was a BMW, or something else uppity.

Sheesh.
Update

Wow, all I can say is Wow!

So the article linked to above was updated as well as this article.   So this Mercedes SUV driving super mom is also the assistant principle at this school where this happened?  And she’s still ‘free’?  I don’t get that.   It surely is sad and tragic, but that woman needs to be locked up.  I can’t wait to find out what her plea deal is and how she’s going to get out of this with little more than a slap on the wrist.
