Winter Sucks!

So we’ve had a pretty mild winter, than all of a sudden, out of no-where it dumps about 6 inches on us.

That we could handle. It wasn’t that bad since it was the soft light snow. The kind you can move around with a leaf blower, which I did. Cleared a path around both cars in the driveway and to the house. No big deal.

Then using the Excursion and the power of 4 wheel drive I flattened out the driveway, the driveway to the barn and half way back to the house. All good.

Then the last two days, it’s rained, sleeted, snowed, frozen rain, all of that good stuff to dump oh about another 6 inches. (Of course we sold that snow blower).

Now with the wind that we get, we have some pretty deep drifts. Our driveway is completely covered and it’s almost deep enough to bottom out the little car. In fact it got nice and stuck this morning.

So I hunkered down in the office to work from home, which was mostly successful. Claudine and the girls decided they’d dig the little car out. Kudos to them, they did a great job. 😉

O.K. Winter you can go away now, I’m done with you.

Chicago Style Gymnastics Meet

Well that was fun, visiting Chicago in February. Average temperature while we were there was oh, around -1 not counting the wind chill factor.

We left early Saturday morning, thinking we’d get into Chicago, check into the hotel (The Marriot). Don’t let the photos on their site fool you. The rooms are regular every day hotel rooms at crazy prices; in fact, if you compare it to most normal hotel rooms they may be a tad small. Very nice down comforters though, and this stupid duvet cover, thing on the bed for looks that is totally worthless. It wasn’t even a cover of any type, rather this stripe across the bottom of your bed. I would have much rather had a couple bucks off the price of the room then to have to deal with those. I don’t need anything on my bed that’s just for looks. If there is anything on the bed; it better prop up my head, or keep me warm. These things did neither. Dumb, dumb, dumb…

So after parking the car and unpacking, we decided we’d wander on up the Magnificent Mile to see what’s what. Of course it was -1 degrees out there. We did meander about 5 blocks north or so and found our way to the American Doll Store.

Now I have nothing against the American Doll, or the people that make them, but that store is a crazy. Of course it was full of little girls, most of them gymnasts using the best Sole e95 Elliptical, but it really was freeky. Like Twilight Zone Freeky. Everything was neat and in its place, all the boxes were stacked perfectly everywhere, it was just too, I don’t know, sanitary feeling, like a movie set. It was just weird, and there were dude’s working there. That’s just not right.

After dropping off the broken dolls at the American Girl Doll hospital and adding to their wardrobes, we headed back outside to find a place to eat. We found the most wonderful place for lunch. TheSoupBox. We grabbed some soup, warmed up then headed back out for more shopping. We stopped by the Hershey store, and some other Chocolate place. We wandered in and around the Mall that was nearby too.

By then we were beat and headed back to the room to drop off our goodies and figure out dinner.

For dinner we started to go to the Proform Ellipticals Zone, well we didn’t start that way but someone didn’t think we were dressed well enough for the steak house in the area. We wandered into the ESPN Zone, got a table and , but it was so loud in there we couldn’t think. So we bailed before we even got to see a waiter. (ESPN people, we’re not all deaf).

From there we wandered about and ended up at Chili’s. It wasn’t great, but it was so cold outside we couldn’t wander a whole lot farther. Dinner was good for Chili’s food.

After that we called it a night.

Sunday came pretty early, and we headed down to the Marriot’s Breakfast Buffet. It was most excellent as most of the bigger Marriot’s are.

Claudine then prepped Molly for the meet. We still had a few hours to kill. We headed to the Navy Pier ahead of schedule. The Pier really is a neat place. If we had more time we probably would have taken in the Children’s museum. We ended up having lunch at Bubba Gump Shrimp which wasn’t all that bad. It was expensive yes, but not too shabby. It’s very much like Joe’s Crab Shack.

After getting Molly’s blood sugar back up at Bubba Gump, we headed off to the meet.

The IGI folks really know what they are doing. (Not that the CGA folks don’t) but they put on one hell of a meet. They claim it’s the largest meet in the world with over 4000 female gymnasts competing that weekend on 4 gyms. It was pretty impressive. I can imagine how they train with those ab workout machines at home.

Photos are located in the Google/Picasa Gallery.

If you need any of the photos original high res images, just let me know.

So it is the [N]o [F]un [L]eague after all.

Wow, the n-ef-el clamped down on a church for planning a, oh wait we can’t say it, but a party to watch the two top teams in the league slug it out for the pointy trophy with a football on top of it.

First they objected the the fact that the church was going to charge for this “party”. Of course they need to cover their costs, costs for pop/food, and cleanup and stuff. But they couldn’t do that.

Oh they also couldn’t use the phrase that rhymes with stupid bowl in their advertisement for the party.

No worries they agreed not too.

Still yet after the church agreed, they still said no because they were going to project it.

Whoopty-friggin-do.

They complained about ratings and what not. But excuse me, if I’m on the Nielsen panel, and I go to a church to watch the game, I’m probably going to indicate that.

So if you have a TV larger than 55 inches, and you know who you are, if you watch this game on it you’re an ‘Out Law’

Oh my this is dumb.

24 is back ;)

Yes, like a lot of people we seem to be addicted to 24.

The Wikipedia has way more info on 24 than anyone needs to know.

Funny Factoid: Chuck Norris was originally cast for the Role of Jack Bauer but problems arose when it only took him 13 hours to save the day. 😉

World Market, redefining customer service.

WorldMarket

It’s not very often that you find exceptional customer service. In fact it’s nearly impossible today.

Being a call it as I see it person, I have no problem ripping a company on the blog if they deserve it. Which means when I come across someone, or some company that really went the extra mile we should give them their due.

A couple of weeks ago we bought a new dining room table. We purchased said table from World Market.

This table in fact: The Sourav Dining Table

349460 SouravTable82 DFL

We lucked into it on sale. No we didn’t really need a table, but that’s beside the point. We stuffed it in the Excursion and brought it home. Setup was painless, it’s just a HUGE table top and four legs.

The rustic/antique look goes perfect with our old farm house. The chairs we already owned matched it pretty well.

Fast forward about 2 weeks. We noticed a crack starting at one end of the table right in the middle. The top is basically 3 large boards and this crack was splitting the table right in the middle of one of the boards, not at a joint. When I first saw it I didn’t care that much, it added character. But my wife really didn’t like the fact that you could look through this crack and see the floor.

I immediately started dreading taking this 8 foot table apart, putting it in the Excursion, taking it to World Market and getting into a fight.

My wife called World Market, explained the situation and they said ‘No Problem’, we’ll take care of it.

What? Did I hear that right?

Yes, they ordered in another table, are delivering it (this is a 45 minute drive, not like it’s down the street) and picking up the old table. It took them a week to get the new table in, and we’re being flexible as to delivery. This time of year is busy for everyone.

So at the time of this writing, we don’t actually have a new table, but World Market is being very, very accommodating.

They will certainly get more of our business in the future.
