Today the entire family took a trip out to Connersville, Indiana to ride the Whitewater Valley Railroad, from Connersville to Metamora, Indiana. Metamora is a frequent destination of mine when I’m out on the bike. There are great roads out there and I stop in for some of the best Italian sausage ever at the Trader’s place and today wasn’t any different.
The train leaves from Connersville promptly at noon. It takes about an hour and a half to get to Metamora, where they leave you there for two hours. This is just about the perfect amount of time if it’s not too busy.
Enough time to find a bathroom, get something to eat, walk across Metamora for ice cream, shop a little, buy some Amish cheese, check out the mill, and shop some more. Not too much though because, well, you don’t want to carry anything or bring it back on the train. At least that was my excuse.
It was a perfect day. It may have hit 85 degrees but there wasn’t any humidity. I feel for anyone who rides that train on a 95+ degree day with humidity.
The railroad station and trains are pretty cool. Maybe when I become an old fart I’ll volunteer my time there and learn more about the railroad.

I would highly recommend this as a great way to blow a Saturday afternoon with the family. Especially if you can hit good weather. Bring a book to read because between both trips you’ll be on the train for 3 hours. There’s a lot to watch and look at out the window but not 3 hours worth. It’s not cheap. $20 for adults, $10 for kids, plus meals at Metamora and what ever else you spend there. You can bring food with you though, the train permits that.
C was house sitting tonight so I took Maria, Molly and Michael out to see Pirates, At Worlds End.
Now being a family of 6 we don’t go out and see that many first run movies, at least not as a family and tonight just reinforced that.
1) The movie experience, as good as it can be in digital at the theaters really isn’t any better than DVD on our plasma TV, in our own home.
2) There are no screaming kids or babies as was the case tonight, but to be fair they were only a mild disturbance and Maria (being 7) was fidgety as well and I’m sure bothered a few folks, but at least she was quiet.
3) The cost, holy-moly, the cost. $30 bucks for two adults and 2 kids, just for tickets. Now we brought bottle watter, but two drinks and two large popcorns tallied another $24. So darn near $60 to take 3 kids to the movies and we were light at the concession stand.
The movie was very good, the special effects were just down right beautiful, as good as Lord of the Rings, the detail was amazing.
I’d rank it ahead of #2, but not quite as good as number one, which, given it’s time is still better but not by much.
And you thought there were only going to be 3 movies? They certainly left it open for a 4th 🙂
As we’ve come to expect, this is an excellent trillogy, and they could easily get away with adding another one or more.
Looking forward to owning it on DVD, HDDVD for that matter.
Low and behold, out of the blue, our old neighbor Everett stopped by for a visit today.
He used to live across the street and his life long goal in life was to own an ecstacy trike. I remember years ago when I first met Everett, he had a photo of one in his barn. Now, this type of trike isn’t my pick, but there is some logic here.
After Everett’s wife died, he moved to Florida, got all set up and eventually picked up a Goldwing trike. It was the bee’s knees. The problem though as Everett would explain it is that it will nickel and dime you to death. The starter went out and it was $800 to get that fixed. You’re dependent on a Honda dealer (although they are just about everywhere). But the cost of anything repair wise for one of the big jap bikes is just too much.
With this trike, it’s a Chevy V6, gets better gas mileage than the wing trike, and if he needs a part, it’s off to the local auto parts store. A starter for this is $65 dollars and it’s not a major surgical procedure to put it on.
Ok, so some of that makes sense.
Anyway, he’s in great shape, looks good and is happy as can be. It was good to see him again. He took all of the kids (including me) for a ride. Then we went to dinner.

Haze our trusty barn cat is MIA 🙁
He hasn’t been seen since last weekend. He’s our out door hanging around cat that’s very social.
He doesn’t have a collar and usually doesn’t wander too far, but… He and Jake don’t like each other much so he may have moved on.
UPDATE
Haze is back :), what happened was this… His safety net, the table on the back porch which was out of the reach of the dogs, and where his food was normally kept, was dismantled and taken down. That left him feeling like we were feeding him to the dogs or something. We replaced that table with another and he’s happily napping in his box on the table again.
