Christmas Shopping Part II

OK, so if you don’t think I’m a perfect husband then just keep this in mind.

I shopped with my wife the day after thanksgiving for 14+ hours, then again on the following day for another 10 hours. I didn’t whine, nor complain. We went out to dinner too on Friday night as well, and I did this all with a broken toe to boot.

Just kidding, I enjoy participating in the event. But it’s getting harder each year. We are blessed. Our family is blessed. Nobody needs anything really, and it’s getting harder and harder to buy for people.

We did luck into some killer bargains though. Some Black Friday left overs that I can’t write about at this time as it wouldn’t be appropriate. Let’s just say some folks are going to really appreciate Santa this year.

I am truly amazed at what people do buy, at the crap that’s available and at the number of places to shop. The economy can’t be as bad as the news would have you believe. Ever place we went was unbelievably crowded. Far worse than any of the last 5 years that I can remember.

Gas prices all under $2.00 a gallon every where.

The only unpleasant experience we ran into was at BestBuy, but maybe I’m jaded, as I said prior, I just don’t like em. I had a really crappy experience with them a couple years ago with a digital camera that didn’t work and returning it cost me more money than they made profit wise on the original purchase (10% restocking fee if I recall correctly) on a $1000 camera, that’s $100 bucks. For what amounts to a defective camera. I don’t like they way you are hounded and hassled at Best buy.

There’s a post over on DataPoohbah about them changing their Black Friday deal for XBox 360’s and making those that stood in line buy bundles. This wouldn’t surprise me at all.

The final results for the weekend were positive. We completed our goal of knocking out 80% or more of our shopping. It was harder than it should have been but it’s done and over with.

There are holes here and there and some gaps to fill but we’re almost there.

I’m interested to see what gets reported to the markets next week. In any event as stores restock, more sales are around the corner leading up to the holiday. There are still deals to be had.

Happy shopping 🙂

Thanksgiving day

Things to be thankful for, family and friends.

My cousin Angie sent us this picture of Grandma and Grandpa Bruce today, not sure exactly when this was. The last thanksgiving day he was alive at my aunts house. Early 80’s I would guess? I’m sure my mom knows for sure.

We spent the day at home with Claudine’s parents. Excellent company and excellent food! Claudine did a hell of a job cooking this year Turkey and all the fixins, taters, green bean casserole, two types of stuffing, corn with bacon, biscuits, and more. It was most excellent.

Hope your thanksgiving is or was a good one.

Women and their birthdays!

Well. Most husbands have a tremendous project in store when it comes to planning their wife’s birthday. Whether it’s planning a party or a romantic evening out. But they know that they’d better plan SOMETHING, or as my husband said in a previous entry – “the world stops!”
I see myself as pretty LOW maintenance…for my birthday the last few years we go do our Xmas shopping together and get most all of it done in one day. We return home to drop off the goods and then go back out to grab a bite to eat, just the two of us. No reservations required, no dressing up, no advance thought necessary. Pretty simple I think.

Not only is it simple – but I even arrange the babysitting – so all he has to do is show up and shop!

This year as I have the past few, I arranged the babysitting for the day after Thanksgiving.

I told him about this this evening and he looked straight at me and said, “I HATE THAT DAY!” Myself, being stunned, asked why.

He answered, “Cause you don’t let ME buy ANYTHING!”

I couldn’t imagine what he meant – I said, “The people at Toys’R Us ask to go to our house for Xmas, we walk out of there with so much stuff! What are you talking about?”

Then the truth came to light…..he answered, “NO, you don’t let me buy anything for ME that day!”

lol

I think I might try the high maintenance approach and see what happens.

Families and Christmas What’s it all about?

We have a medium to large (extended) family. Though in the overall scheme of things, it’s probably small by some standards.

As long as I can remember (and I’m nearly 40) the family has gathered at Christmas time. We’ve gathered at other times of the year as well but rarely all of the family. We certainly saw each other during other times of the year but we (ALL) always got together at Christmas.
