Reloading, with new components.

montanagold

Reloading is fun and economical.  I outlined why I wanted to do it in an article a while back, almost a year to the day:  Reloading 101

For the last year we’ve mostly shot ammo that we’ve reloaded.  Except for maybe 300 rounds of factory, everything we shot this year was reloaded.

So here are the things I’ve learned this year.

1) Cast Lead, while economical, pretty much sucks.  I’ve shot it for a year now, about 12k rounds through various guns (All Glocks), some with aftermarket barrels but we’ve probably put 6k rounds down the Glock 34 this year alone with no ill effects.   Accuracy is fine, it’s just dirtier.

Disclaimer:  Glock says don’t do this.   I’m convinced the reason they say that is because people don’t clean their guns.  I do, before and after every match and generally speaking every time I shoot them.  Yes, I have shot a GSSF match with my LEAD reloads.  I could also give my gun to the Glock Armorer after cleaning and they’d never know it had lead through it.  You just have to keep it clean.

Cast Lead, even good bullets from SNS Casting are dirty.  Speed shooting through a smoke screen is no fun, and in fact I’m kind of tired of it so I’m switching.

Cast Lead is dirty, you will need to clean your guns more often if you use it.  You should clean them anyway, which is why the dirty gun part didn’t bother me.

Cast Lead with a compensator sucks though, the comp will lead up and it’s a bitch to get off.   Another reason I’m switching up.

It’s dirty when you reload, and well, it’s lead.   I’m very diligent about washing my hands after I reload or shoot.  But reload 400 rounds and your bullet handling hand will be frickin dirty, scrub brush required dirty.   Reloading with plated bullets eliminates this.

I’m about 2/3rds the way through my first order from Montana Gold Bullet, Inc. and I’m really liking the results so far.

Reloading is cleaner, shooting is cleaner, and no smoke screen after things get heated up.

So if you have $340 just laying around, hit them up and order me a box of 9mm 115gr FMJ’s.   You’ll find them here

Your purchase will help further my shooting as well as further promote “Super Molly” in the shooting world.   She needs your support cause I can’t afford her alone Winking smile.

Here’s Molly on one of the stages.  Strings 3 and 5 where her best, but it wasn’t her best day by a long shot.  We’d all been sick and struggling with bronchitis.  So that kind of sucked.

Molly, Glock 34 @ Steel Challenge 2012

I just finished reloading 800 rounds tonight which will get us through Friday Night Steel and the GSSF Match this weekend.  Yep it’s work, but the cost is still about half of factory.

I have never bought new brass.   From the day we started shooting I’ve been saving it.  So when we started reloading, I already had a bunch.   I was given a bucket load by a fellow shooter who had more than he could ever use.

We’ve pretty much maintained that quantity all year long.  We pick up the brass we shoot when we can, but there have been plenty of lost brass matches.   We pretty much volunteer at the local shoots, and if you get your hands dirty setting up or tearing down, you’ll likely be able to pick up some brass.    Again, we’ve bought absolutely ZERO casings.

So, CASE CHECK YOUR AMMO.

Especially before a match.   I’ve had a few ‘issues’ but only about 3 and never if I case checked it.    I get in a hurry and sometimes don’t and I’ve had two rounds stick in the camber that had to be pounded out with a squib rod.  WHOLE rounds mind you, no squibs.

I have had 2 squibs this year with FACTORY FEDERAL .22 ammo that we shoot in Rimfire.  Too bad I can’t reload that.  These were show stopping, bullet stuck in the barrel squibs.  From FACTORY AMMO.  So I’m convinced, do it right and you too can have better ammo than factory.

I’ve used Federal Primers exclusively.  We’ve ‘slicked up’ our Glocks and they can be prone to light strikes with CCI primers, so I just don’t use them.  I’ve had 0 failure to fires this year with my reloads with Federal primers.

Powder, still using Alliant Bullseye.   I like it, it works.

So yeah, if you shoot, you should reload.  It’s fun, and far more economical.  We honestly couldn’t afford to do it if we didn’t.

Happy shooting.

Saturday Steel First Annual Juniors Match

Today was the first annual Junior match at Saturday Steel.

Of course our kids rocked the house.  Both Molly and Maria shot very, very well.

It was a good turn out, about 22 kids.

Dave Reichle explained the rules and how the match would go.

Maria had a great Day! Here’s stage 1 Rimfire
Maria Stage 2 String 1
Maria Stage 2 String 2
Molly Stage 2

Molly swept her age group, and Maria came in 2nd in Rimfire for her age group.

Afterward the whole family shot the regular Saturday Steel Match.

IT was way to close to be comfortable in Rimfire…

Saturday Steel May 12th. (Open Gun Update)

First and foremost Maria shot her first match.

She shot the Ruger 22/45 in the Rimfire category and beat some folks!  (9 folks to be exact!)

She’d only shot it previously at our range just a couple of times.

We’re proud of her.

I also shot my new ‘Precious’ G17 Open Gun in Unlimited.   It was it’s first outing.  I was a bit tentative.  The only rounds through it previously were the 80 or so I ran through it to get a load that would cycle it.

I wasn’t that far off the pace set by Jeff so I was pleased.

I followed that up with a DNF at the GSSF meet in Dayton.   (Don’t be like me, case check your ammo people).   I had a bad round that jammed up the gun good, real good.  Had I properly case checked them all I could have avoided that. I didn’t have the tools to unjam it at the match so I had to take a DNF.

Lesson learned.

Glock Race Gun-Phase (3) Better News.

Alright after the mighty FAIL that was mounting that regular C-More Slide ride to the top of  My G17 with that ‘The Accessories’ Mount.  (Which is for sale by the way).

I switched gears, did some horse trading, and got the rest of my package and now we have this:

Glock_RaceGun_Phase_031

Improvements include:

  • LoneWolf Stainless Steel Match Barrel, locks up good-n-tight, threaded. (nabbed of ebay since LoneWolf was out of stock, good thing cause I saved a few bones).
  • LoneWolf Compensator
  • C-more STS 7MOA red dot.   I like it, but I also like my dots to look like dots and not ‘fish’.   I’m a little disappointed in the shape of this dot.  My TruGlo Red-Dot on the Ruger has a better defined Dot.
  • A Lonewolf (new design) Skeletonized Steel Striker and 4lb spring to further sharpen the trigger.Striker

So I swapped out the components, installed the barrel and comp, installed the sight, got all giddy, grabbed some ammo and headed to the range.

Bummer, the gun wouldn’t cycle.   I was skeptical when I bought the compensator because of the note on the product: “We highly recommend the use of LWD stainless guide rod and ISMI reduced power recoil springs with this product. Light loads or reduced power ammunition may not run reliably.

Well pfft, I already have an 11lb ISMI spring, on a captured stainless guide rod. I looked and ISMI doesn’t seem to make a 10 but I’ve inquired.  I know my loads are a little light but they aren’t super-light.

So back to the house, crank out 20 or so loads more loads with .5 more grains and grab a box of factory ammo.  Back to the range.  (Sure is nice that the range is in my back yard).

Some success but still not enough success, not even the factory Federal Red-box ran to my satisfaction.   So I called up Jeff, and talked it over with him.

I verified that I am running an 11lb spring.  Cranked out another 25 rounds with nearly a grain more than my standard round that cycled the gun perfectly before. Back to the range to test.

I giggled inside.   This thing is awesome.

Now next up is the slide lightening.  Actually it involves getting a new LoneWolf Slide, one that hopefully is cut to using their Skeleton pattern.

Though I’m trying to get a feel for just how much weight savings that is.  Hopefully the lonewolf guy can answer that.  I’d surely hate to spend the coin and end up with insignificant savings.  I am also considering just strategically swish cheezing my factory slide.  Holes, lots of holes.

Glock_RaceGun_Phase_035

There is still work to be done, but for now I should have ‘enough’ open gun to start making a couple guys sweat.   We’ll find out Saturday.  I wish I had more time to test, hope I don’t lay a big egg. Smile

Glock Race Gun-Phase (2) Bad news.

Ugh, this is unfortunate.

I shot the Ghetto bottom feeder Glock ‘open gun’ friday night.   Other than some dry fire practice it hadn’t been shot previously.  At this time the only thing that makes it open is the cmore.  Parts (Barrel, Compensator and other go fast parts) have been ordered but they have yet to arrive.

Stage 1, and Stage 2 went pretty well.   I was happy.   Then it happened on stage 3, a malfunction.   Tap-Rack and go.  I noticed I got a live round and an empty case. Hrm…

Then Saturday while shooting a bit at the range with a buddy I brought it out to show him.   He shot it and was kind of excited.  I shot it a couple time and again had a couple of issues.

Then Molly showed up and she wanted to shoot it so I sat back and watched.

Glock_RaceGun_Phase_031

Sadly she too had a couple malfunctions and it was clear, the cartridge were being ejected straight into the Cmore, even though it was offset quite a bit.

About 1 in 20 times it would bounce straight back down into the chamber area and jam things up.   I wasn’t happy with this mount to begin with but am not excited about a mount that requires me to alter the frame.   So if you have a good source for a mount that allows me to use this Cmore rotated 90 degrees and doesn’t require me to modify the frame let me know.

Otherwise the plan now is to go slide mount with a smaller optic.

More as this unfolds.
