News on Zed, not sure it’s good.

Some of you know that Zed has had some carburetor issues. Over the winter I had the carburetors rebuilt and I reinstalled them a couple weeks ago. Well, Zed still didn’t run right.

I took it into the shop expecting that I had a vacuum leak or something that I missed. Perhaps I just didn’t install something right, or the carbs were still out of wack.

Almost two weeks have past since I dropped it off. Friday I got a hold of Randy. The conversation went something like this:

Me: Randy?
Randy: Yes.
Me: This is Matt Disher.
Randy: Yes.
Me: The ZX11, the black one?
Randy:: Yes.
Me: Any news?
Randy: You’re right, that bike runs like crap.
Me: Thanks.
Randy: I just got time to look at it yesterday, I got it apart, got the airbox off, I don’t think it’s in the carbs. I think you have an electrical problem. I got tied up in some tire changes, I hope to get back to it soon.
Me: OK

It’s now Tuesday 🙁

I’m bumming.

Zed Lives

Ahh, today was a good day…

I took a mental day from work today. Finally a day without conflicts and a day warm enough for me to put Zed’s rebuilt carburators back on. It went remarkably well. I even managed to get the running lights working again.

Zed runs good, pretty darn good, though not 100% perfect. Which reminds me why I should have just taken the whole bike to the shop in the first place. While I do enjoy tinkering, and am mechanically inclinded. There are some things, like carburators, that I just HATE to screw with. It would have been far better off if if I had simply take the who bike to Randy instead of just the carbs.

You see I thought I’d try and save some time and money by just taking the carbs themselves and having them rebuilt, which mostly worked. But now if after a new tank of gas more carb work needs to be done, well Randy will get the whole bike, and the costs I’ve saved will be for not.

Sometimes some things just don’t work out as planned.

Motorcycles and Carbs oh my

Well today was nice enough (read warm enough) to actually get outside and start to take the carbs of of Zed.

Apparently I’m not as smart as I thought I was.

Each time I take this bike apart I get faster at it, which is good, but that’s not the idea here. I don’t want to take it apart all the time.

It really only took about an hour to get to the carbs and figure out how to get them off the bike. No big deal.

There are however things that still attach to it, like the throttle cable(s), choke, and air/idle adjust cable. The latter two were easy enough to get off.

The throttle cable has me completely stumped.

Here’s hoping someone on TWT can shed some light on the issue or what I’m failing to grasp. I’m starting to wonder why I didn’t just take the whole dang bike to the shop and not just the carbs….

Saturday…

This day started out well. My cousin and her husband were supposed to come down. Dave is supposed to take a look at a few things we need done around the house that I don’t have time to do, nor am I that interested in doing.

I also need to ride down to Dry Ridge to meet Cooter for lunch and pickup this:

a Shoei Syncrotec helmet, a nice top of the line Shoei flip up. An early Christmas gift kinda. He bought it and didn’t like the way it fits with his glasses.

My intentions are simple. Ride down, have lunch get back before Dave and Sally leave. Claudine is prepared to discuss what she wants done.

Today is the first Saturday in a LONG time that we haven’t had anything serious going on and Cooter and I couldn’t connect last weekend so today is the day I have to meet him.

Digging up old stuff

Looking through the web-logs I noticed a number of hits coming from DirtRider and other forums looking for content I no longer had linked to on the site since it went blog like.

I’ve resurrected some of that stuff since, while it’s still old, it still has value. While I no longer own a KDX, and am actually dirtbike-less at the moment since I sold the YZ 🙁 I still do enjoy it and am looking forward to getting another one soon (shhh don’t tell Claudine).

So if you’ve stopped by here looking for some of the information on swapping out your fork springs or changing your clutch or moving your kickstand location on the KDX you’ll find that here:
